Handout from May 16

Question: Is a food distribution program needed in this area?

Con

Pro  The Bible mandates care for the poor and hungry.  Neighborhood ministry is a part of our heritage.   We are in a food desert.

Question: Is this the time for his to launch a new ministry?

Con    We are at a low point in terms of attendance and money.

Pro    As we resume our activities, we have a chance to reintroduce Central to our                         neighborhood as an active, compassionate and effective ministry.

Question: How can we avoid overcommitting to this ministry?

Con   We could “bite off more than we can chew.”

Pro   We will start small and expand only if we have the resources to do so.

Question: Can we afford this ministry?

Con   Our financial resources are limited.

Pro   Though there will be some start-up costs, we already have funds set aside for local ministry, There are other sources (current funds sent to UBIC, donations from those who receive food, fund raising efforts, donations from neighborhood businesses.

Question: From where will the people needed to staff the ministry come?

Con: We do not have the same human resources from which we have depended in the past.

Pro    There are still several congregation members who will “pitch in” to staff this ministry.  Also. There are other churches in our area, people who need service hours from the courts, people from the neighborhood. Boy Scouts, AA members.

Question: What other benefits should we anticipate?

Con

Pro     People are attracted to a church involved in the community. People in our community will share spiritual needs with a church the cares. Our children and youth will see our Christian faith as an active adventure.
