Background of the drama:  Two days after Adolf Hitler was installed as chancellor of Germany in 1933, Dietrich Bonhoeffer—a young Christian theologian who completed his formal training just a few years earlier — delivered a radio address attacking Hitler’s leadership. He was cut off the air. That was just the beginning. Bonhoeffer would spend the next 12 years refuting Nazism and criticizing the German Christian Church‘s complicity in its racist, genocidal mission. He eventually participated in the resistance movement and was imprisoned and sent to the concentration camp at Buchenwald in April 1945 for his involvement in a group that tried to assassinate Hitler—the Valkyrie Conspiracy.

Here are rehearsal photos of the The Beams Are Creaking which premiers at Central on Thursday evening November 1.

Gary Broughman, playing Bishop Bell of the Church of England, reacts to news from his secretary (Louise Schneberger) that Bonhoeffer’s plot against Hitler has been discovered.

Sonny Gallman plays Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s brother-in-law Hans in The Beams are Creaking. Here, Hans, and Klaus Bonhoeffer try to convince Dietrich that the way ahead includes eliminating Hitler by force.

The Beams are Creaking weekend at Central includes the release of the memoir of Helen Cummins’ mother Anna Lou Bollinger, titled An American Fraulein Caught in Hitler’s Germany.
